Board Meeting: October 29, 2024

The Board meeting for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board took place on October 29, 2024. Staff brought forward 2 reports with 3 recommendations, and I brought forward a Notice of Motion for discussion.

Coming out of the Committee of the Whole, I voted in favour of the recommendations in the Annual Report on RIAT Activities. The purpose of the RIAT is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve the district school boards’ operations in the Ontario East region. The recommendations were carried in the consent agenda.

Coming out of the Committee of the Whole, I voted in favour of the recommendations in RIAT Internal Audit Plan for 2024 to 2025. This plan outlines the audits that the team will undertake in the 2024 to 2025 school year. The recommendations were carried in the consent agenda.

I voted in favour of the Board Work Plan for 2024 to 2025. The Board Work Plan outlines the activities the board aims to accomplish in the 2024 to 2025 school year. This includes reviewing the mathematics achievement plan, the literacy achievement plan, and conducting the Elementary Program Review. I encourage everyone to review the Board Work Plan and if you have any questions please reach out. The recommendations were carried.

I brought forward and voted in favour of the Notice of Motion for the Ad Hoc Policy Review Committee. This motion reviews the mandate of the current Ad Hoc Policy Review Committee and proposes establishing a special purpose Policy Review Committee. In my opinion, one of the most important roles of a School Board Trustee is to assist the Board in the establishment, review, amendment, implementation, rescission and evaluation of policies. This work is an ongoing part of the Trustee role and there will be a constant need for this work on an ongoing basis. Therefore, it would be very beneficial to have this committee structure mirror our other committees in order to continue making recommendations and reviewing policies. The recommendations were carried.

Please note, that the opinions expressed here are entirely my own and do not reflect an official position of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board or the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board of Trustees. Please note answers from staff are paraphrased, the recording can be found here if you would like to watch the entire meeting. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me using my contact form here.
