Board Meeting: May 28, 2024
The Board meeting for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board took place on May 28, 2024. Staff brought forward 8 reports with 12 recommendations.
Coming out of the Committee of the Whole on May 7, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-067 on the School Naming-New Stittsville High School. The naming of the new secondary school is connected to the Strategic Plan in the area of learning, the new secondary school will assist in improved program accessibility for students who reside in the school’s catchment area. The name recommended in the report is Maplewood Secondary School. This represents the flora and fauna of the local area and is a connection to the changing nature and natural beauty of Canada’s landscapes. The recommendations were carried.
Coming out of the Committee of the Whole on May 7, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-060 on the Naming of the New Elementary School in Findlay Creek. The naming of the new secondary school is connected to the Strategic Plan in the area of learning, the new secondary school will assist in improved program accessibility for students who reside in the school’s catchment area. The name recommended in the report is Mino Miikan Elementary School. Mino Miikan translates to "the good path" in the Algonquin language. The committee saw it as a representation of a positive beginning for students, opening many doors for students, a journey towards learning, growth, and community contribution. The recommendations were carried.
Coming out of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Board Self-Evaluation Process and the Director Performance Evaluation Process on May 9, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-074 on Board Annual Evaluation for 2023 to 2024. This report reviews the process used for the 2022 to 2023 Board Evaluation an identify opportunities for improvement and to discuss the timing and process to be used for the 2023 to 2024 annual evaluation. The recommendations were carried.
Coming out of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Board Self-Evaluation Process and the Director Performance Evaluation Process on May 9, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-073 on the Update on Ontario Regulation 83/24 Director of Education Performance Appraisal. This report initiates the 2023 to 2024 Director Performance Evaluation process and provides on update on the changes to the evaluation process based on Ontario Regulation 83/24. The recommendations were carried.
Coming out of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Board Self-Evaluation Process and the Director Performance Evaluation Process on May 9, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-076 on the Terms of Reference for Director and Board Performance Appraisal Committee. This report seeks the approval of the Terms of Reference for the Director and Board Performance Appraisal Committee in response to Ontario Regulation 83/24. The recommendations were carried.
Coming out of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Board Self-Evaluation Process and the Director Performance Evaluation Process on May 9, 2024, I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-077 on the Director of Education Performance Plan. This report outlines the new performance plan based on the Ontario Regulation 83/24. The recommendations were carried.
I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-075 on the Appointments to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association for 2024 to 2025 Term of Office. Confirming appointments to Ontario Public School Boards’ Association enables the Board to effectively participate in the association that represents public district school boards and public-school authorities across Ontario. During the discussion the recommendation to appoint Trustees Scott and Jennekens be appointed as the two directors to the OPSBA Board of Directors, the voting and alternate delegates for the Eastern Regional Council meetings, and the voting and alternate delegates for the OPSBA Annual General meeting for the 2024 to 2025 Term of Office. The recommendations were carried.
I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-079 on the Appointment of Association Alternate to the Special Education Advisory Committee. Appointing community representatives and alternates to the Special Education Advisory Committee supports the District’s commitment to implementing sound governance structures, as well as encouraging broad community engagement in District initiatives and supports the social responsibility pillar of the 2023 to 2027 Strategic Plan. The recommendations were carried.
I voted in favour of the recommendations in Report 24-089 on the Appointment of External Member of the Audit Committee. The Audit Committee works with District management to ensure that matters affecting financial, compliance and risk management activities are conducted efficiently and that an appropriate system of internal control exists. The external members of the audit committee are an integral part of the committee. The recommendations were carried.
